HUNT CLUB MEMBER REFUSES BOND

The man who started the Blue Ridge Hunt Club to fight gun control and prepare for armed conflict with the government has revoked his request to get out on bond.

James Mullins pleaded guilty to seven federal firearm charges last week and will be sent to prison after a pre-sentencing report is finished. In the meantime, his attorney had sought a bond hearing to get Mullins released until sentencing. Mullins needed time to get his personal affairs in order, attorney Jack Gregory told the court.

But Mullins said Tuesday he had asked that the hearing be canceled.

``I figured I'd save everybody a lot of trouble and paperwork,'' he said from the Roanoke City Jail, where he has been since his arrest last July. ``I'm already used to everything. Every day I spend in here is a day off my sentence.''

Prosecutor Don Wolthuis said last week that he planned to oppose bond for Mullins because the government believes he is a danger to government witnesses.

Mullins was the founder of the Pulaski hunt club, which met only three times last summer before federal agents arrested several members. They were charged with possessing illegal weapons and conspiracy to commit firearm violations.

Mullins and another hunt club member - a federally licensed firearm dealer - agreed to plea bargains last week. One member goes on trial next month, and two others in May.
