WASHINGTON - Heavy trucks and tractor-trailers will be required to have anti-lock brakes under a rule imposed Tuesday by the Transportation Department.
``The new requirement will prevent about 29,000 crashes involving up to 500 deaths and 25,000 injuries annually,'' Transportation Secretary Federico Pena said.
But the move comes at a time when Congress is considering imposing limits on new federal regulation, and whether that will roll back or delay the new requirement remains to be seen.

Death in lion's pen ruled a suicide
WASHINGTON - The woman who was mauled to death inside the lions' pen at the National Zoo early Saturday committed suicide, the District of Columbia medical examiner ruled Tuesday.
Margaret Davis King, 36, of Little Rock, Ark., died of massive blood and soft-tissue loss after one or both of the lions in the display attacked her, said Dr. Joye Carter.
Carter said the woman probably died several minutes after she was attacked. Toxicology reports, which would show whether drugs or alcohol were involved, will not be complete for several weeks, Carter said.
Records show the victim had a history of mental problems. In 1988, King was charged with assault and making threats, but was found innocent ``by reason of mental defects or disease'' and committed to the Arkansas State Hospital in Little Rock.
