Town Council approved a request Tuesday from Fralin and Waldron Inc., a Roanoke developer, to rezone 22 acres between Vista Via and Diamond Pointe subdivision. Added to acreage already zoned for residential development, the rezoning creates a 95-acre tract for the new subdivision.
Town Council and the Planning Commission unanimously approved the rezoning after hearing one resident speak against the request at a public hearing.
"When do we put the brake on [development]?" asked Bob Cruise. "Overall, what's going to happen to Christiansburg and Montgomery County if we continue development at the pace it's going?"
Other speakers wondered about the subdivision's impact on recreation.
The developers promised to devote nine or 10 acres to parks and recreation.
In other matters:
Council approved the Blacksburg firm of Mills, Oliver and Webb to submit a preliminary design and cost estimate for the first two stages of the town's new recreation center.
The preliminary design is expected in about six to eight weeks.
Council appointed John Price, a former member of the Montgomery County Planning Commission, to be the town's citizen member of the New River Valley Planning District Commission, replacing Town Manager John Lemley, who had been on the commission for 25 years.
