W&L'S SEARCH ABOUT TO BEGIN

Today is the application deadline for the men's basketball coaching job at Washington and Lee, which is good news for Mike Walsh.

Walsh, the school's athletic director, said Wednesday he already had received more than 120 applications and was eager to begin the hiring process.

A committee will begin reviewing the applications this week in hopes of narrowing the field to four or five candidates, Walsh said. Those candidates then will be brought to Lexington for interviews.

Walsh said he would like to have a coach hired by the week of April 3-7.

The vacancy was created in May 1994, when Walsh informed Verne Canfield this season would be his last. Canfield joined the W&L athletic department in 1964 and coached the Generals for 31 seasons.

An advertisement in The NCAA News invited applications for the position described as including responsibilities of ``recruiting; scheduling; and budgeting as well as teaching duties in the physical education program and coaching responsibilities in a second sport,'' probably golf.

Walsh said the committee would evaluate the entire range of the applicants' qualifications.

``We want someone who we think can provide leadership to the basketball team, and someone who is familiar with recruiting within rigid academic standards,'' he said.
