Principal Patricia Sales said Wednesday that the gun was discovered soon after the student arrived one morning last week.
A student learned about the gun and alerted a teacher. The gun was confiscated shortly thereafter, Sales said. No students were endangered or threatened, she said.
Sales said the incident is being handled internally by the school system, and county police have not been involved.
``We have a student conduct code that we use in cases like this,'' she said. But she would not identify the punishment or discuss the reason the youngster brought the gun to school.
