THAXTON MAN INDICTED IN SHOOTING

A Thaxton man was indicted by a Bedford County grand jury this week on a charge of shooting his girlfriend in the arm with a shotgun.

Joseph N. Newcomer, 30, was indicted on four charges stemming from the shooting. A felon, he faces up to 48 years in prison if convicted on all counts. His trial is set for May 25.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz said Newcomer's former girlfriend, Cynthia Orange, required extensive surgery and may have to have her arm amputated.

Newcomer had been complaining about Orange's coming home late from work, Krantz said. The shooting occurred in their house.
