Bell Services moves downtown

Bell Services Inc. has moved its business to 502 Fifth St. S.W., in the former Virginia Lithograph building in downtown Roanoke's urban enterprise zone.

John and Maria Bell, the owners, said the relocation will give the company an opportunity for expansion.

Bell Services provides computer-aided design, drafting, programming and database development services. It employs more than 30 people and works with customer companies all over the world.

Phil Sparks of the Roanoke Department of Economic Development worked with Jim Bolling of Waldvogel, Poe & Cronk Real Estate Group Inc. to find the facility. A portion of the financing was arranged through Stan Hale of the Southwest Virginia Community Development Fund.

AT&T wants callers to choose carriers

AT&T said Wednesday it has asked the State Corporation Commission to allow telephone customers to chose a carrier other than their local phone company to place local toll calls. The company, which provides long-distance service in the state, has asked that Virginians be allowed to choose among local carriers for toll calls to nearby places. Those calls now are automatically routed to Bell Atlantic or other local phone companies.
