BASKETBALL GAMES OPEN THIS WEEKEND

The 26th annual Knights of Columbus basketball tournament opens play this weekend at the Roanoke Catholic gym and will run through March 19, when championship games are held in three divisions.

Five opening round games are scheduled Friday with the rest slated for Saturday.

In the Pee Wee/Midget League tournament for ages 9-11, the Vinton Hokies take on the Knights of Columbus Cougars Friday at 7:15 p.m. Other first round games match the North Roanoke Hawks at 10 a.m. Saturday, the North Roanoke Wolfpack at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and the Cave Spring Blazers against the Mount Pleasant Suns at 7 p.m. Saturday.

In the Junior League tournament for ages 13-15, the Cloverdale Suns battle the Knights of Columbus Hawks at 5 p.m. Friday, while the West Salem Rockets meet the North Roanoke Celtics at 9:15 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the High Street Saints tackle the Vinton Hawks at noon, and the Cave Spring Hornets meet the South Salem Maroons at 4:45 p.m.

The biggest tournament will be the Little League for ages 11-13 with two games on Friday and the rest on Saturday. The Friday games match the North Roanoke Tarheels against the Cave Spring Heat at 6:15 p.m., and the Cave Spring Warriors against the Williamson Road Wahoos at 8:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the Fincastle Shadows battle the Vinton Running Rebels at 8:45 a.m.; the Vinton Hornets meet the Roanoke Catholic Celtics at 11 a.m.; South Salem Maroons take on North Roanoke Hawks at 1:15 p.m.; the Cave Spring Cavaliers play the North Roanoke Knicks at 3:30 p.m.; the Cave Spring Hornets challenge the Vinton Tarheels at 6 p.m.; and the Vinton Blue Devils test the West Salem Magic at 8 p.m.

Second round games in the Pee Wee/Midget and Junior League tournaments will be held March 18. Second round games in the Little League tournament will be held on Sunday, beginning at 12:30 p.m. with semifinals set for March 18. Championship games in all three tournaments are scheduled for March 19.

There will also be cheerleading competition and a one-on-one challenge featuring top area high school players.
