The recall for tie rod repairs involves 51,000 vehicles in the United States and Canada. The rods could become overloaded and fracture, but that should not significantly affect steering control, the company said.
Ford has received nine reports of rod fractures, none involving an injury.
Ford also said it will modify the brake system in about 7,200 two-door Explorers to correct stopping distances that may exceed federal requirements.
The company will notify owners to return their vehicles to dealers for service.
