White, Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Norma B. and Sam McNiel, Roanoke; two grandsons, Christopher Ryan and Stephen Clay Bandy; special friends, Wayne Sweeney, Phyllis and Pete Terry. BURNETTE, Clovis A. Sr., (``Sonny""), 62, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 9, 1995. Mr. Burnette was preceded in death by his son, Andrew D. Burnette and his brother, Leo D. Burnette. He was a retired electrician from Burnette Electric Contractors and is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, C. Aubrey and Nancy L. Burnette, Bedford, Mark W. and Charlotte G. Burnette, Roanoke, Michael E. Burnette, Winston-Salem, N.,C.; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Burnette, Roanoke; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Claudine S. Lotts, Fredericksburg, Opaline B. Reed and her husband, Oakley, JoAnn B. Tester and her husband, Nathan, all of Goodview; a brother, Ronald W. Burnette and his wife, Sylvia, Turner, Maine; a sister-in-law, Ann T. Burnette, Bedford; also several nieces and nephews. BURNOP, Roy James, 69, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 12, 1925 in Smyth County, a son of the late George R. Burnop and Josephine Kegley Burnop. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Daniel Burnop. He was a retired engineer with Norfolk Southern and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers of Norfolk Southern. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He is survived by his present wife, Helen Hornick Burnop; two daughters and son-in-law, Sharon Sllusher, Bedford, Teresa and Allen White, Salem; three sisters and brother-in-law, Minnie Carroll, Annie Booher, both of Salem, Mary and Dan McNeil, Roanoke; a devoted granddaughter, Jenny Slusher, Bedford; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Burnop, Salem; devoted friends and neighbors, Landon and Harlene Witt, Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 11, 1995, at 11 a.m. from the Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, by the Rev. Ray Lyons. Interment will follow in the Virginia Memorial Park. CAWLEY, Samuel O., 81, of Mt. Airy, N. C., formerly of Vinton, died Thursday, March 9, 1995. Arrangements by Lotz Vinton Chapel.

CHITTUM, Margaret F. Wheeler, 67, of Buena Vista, died Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at the home of her daughter in Buena Vista. Born January 4, 1928, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Ashby Alexander Wheeler and Sadie Nuckols Wheeler. She was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church and a member of Lexington Women of the Moose. She, along with her husband L.E. ``Red"" Chittum, who preceded her in death on April 17, 1988, were owners of the Buena Vista City Cab Company. She is survived by four daughters, Elaine C. Floyd, Mary Ellen Carter and Amy C. Hall all of Buena Vista, and Linda D. Ward, Appomattox; two sons, Barry Chittum and Michael Chittum, both of Buena Vista; a foster sister, Shirley Mikels, Buena Vista; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Fune ral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Chip Pendleton officiating. Interment will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. HALE, Charles E. (""Shine""), 80 of Floyd, passed away Monday, March 6, 1995, at Skyline Manor Nursing Home. He was formerly of Bent Mountain, and was a farmer most of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Pruitt Hale, and one son, James Hale, son-in-law, Jessie Conner Sr., four grandsons, Sidney and Charles Nichols, Jimmy and Woody Conner. KEARNS, Catherine Clingenpeel, (``Kate""), 79, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 9, 1995, in a local hospital. She was th e widow of John W. Kearnes. Mrs. Kearnes was a veteran who proudly served her country during World War II. She was a longtime member of Oakland Baptist Church and retired from C&P Telephone Company after many years of service. She is survived by a brother, Clyde Minter Clingenpeel, Waldorf, Md.; an uncle, several aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the Sanctuary Renovation Fund at Oakland Baptist Church. MARTIN, Hannah Wray, 77, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 8, 1995. She was a member of Colonial Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Martin was the widow of Cecil A. MIDKIFF, John Keith, 34, of Radford, passed away Monday, March 7, 1995. He was preceded in death by his father, George E. Midkiff Sr. He was a 1979 graduate of Radford High School, a veteran of the US Navy, where he achieved the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class and was awarded a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy Expeditionary Medal and the United States Navy Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge, he became an aircraft mechanic for Dyncorp, where he worked until the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, Barbara L. Midkiff; son; Jason Edward Midkiff of Lexington Park, Md.; mother, Barbara B. Midkiff of Radford; brother and sister-in-law; George and Vickie Midkiff of Radford; sister and brother-in-law, Deborah and Richard L. Myers of Christiansburg; niece, Tracy Midkiff of Radford; nephew, G. E. Midkiff of Radford. OVERSTREET, Edith Clarke Holland 81, of Bedford, died on Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at the Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Franklin County, December 3, 1913, a daughter of the late, George P. Holland and Mary Clarke Perdue Holland; she was the widow of Claude Johnson Overstreet. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Lolene H. King; four brothers, Elwood, Merrill, Curtis, and Wilson Holland. She is survived by one son and his wife, Claude McLeod and Farzy Overstreet; a granddaughter, Melody and grandson, Michael Overstreet, all of Los Angeles, Calif; four sisters, Martha H. Peake, Beulah H. Simpson, Frances H. Long Oliver, Doris Ann H. Taylor; two brothers, Warren Holland, Jack Holland; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was a retired Registered Nurse from Lewis Gale Hospital and a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church and the Otterburn Garden Club. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, 2 p.m. at the Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. D. Glen Langston with interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery. PRICE, Samuel Turner, 95, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 1995. He was born in Calloway, Va. to the late Joe and Rosa Turner Price. He was married to Dorothy Penn Price, who preceded him in death. Mr. Price retired from the N & W Railroad. Survivors include one daughter, Gaynelle (Leroy) Taylor, Upper Marlboro, Md.; three sons, Alfred Price, District Heights, Md., Ralph Price, Roanoke, and Dr. Frank Price, Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Nannie Pannell, Salem; one brother, Elder Joseph (Evelyn) Price, Washington, D.C.; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Frank and Cornelia Penn, James Ella Jones, and Josephine Penn, all of Roanoke; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. REEDER, Stanley Waylett 72, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Tuesday, March 7, 1995, of cancer. Mr. Reeder was born in Gering, Nebraska, October 15, 1922. He is survived by his father, Harry H. Reeder; a daughter, Dr. Enid L. Burrows; a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Jody D. Brown and Dr. Joseph G. Brown; a sister, Ann Marie Earlywine; one grandson and his wife, Joseph Stanley and Amy Brown; three granddaughters, Jennifer Jane Brown, Robin Neecka Burrows and Lanette Elizabeth Burrows; one great-granddaughter, Tanley Katharine Brown; a s pecial friend, Jacqueline Coffey; an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Vinton Groot; several cousins; and numerous friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth B. Reeder; his mother, Albertine E. Reeder; his brother, Thomas Reeder. After a career as an industrial engineer at Cushman Motor Works in Lincoln, Neb., he retired to Smith Mountain Lake where he was an avid bridge player, founding president of the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club, and supporter of the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre. Consistent with his lifetime service in several civic organizations including Shrine and Lions International, he hoped the donation of his body would further medical research and education. The family requests that any memorials be directed to the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club Scholarship Fund. A celebration of his life will be held later.

He was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by a son, Edward Duane Spraker. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Krenning Spraker; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and C. Ray Johnson, Salem, Theal and Jim Edwards, Newport News; two sisters, Elizabeth S. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a son, Van Weeks Jr ., his parents, Raymond and Maggie Hite Weeks, a sister, Earlyn Weeks Shelburne, sisters-in-law, Vera Austin Weeks, Lorena S. Hale, brothers-in-law, Charles G. Surface, William B. Surface.
