Navy Lt. Michael A. Barnes, son of Michael A. and Carole A. Barnes of Blacksburg, was recently promoted to his current rank while serving about the guided missile frigate USS Aubrey Fitch, homeported in Mayport, Fla.
He is a 1987 graduate of Blacksburg High School and a 1991 graduate of Old Dominion University.
Army reserve Pvt. William D. Martin recently completed basic training at Fort Leonard E. Wood, in Waynesville, Mo.
He is the son of Donnie W. and Debbie R. Martin of Newport and is a 1994 graduate of Giles County High School.
Melinda K. Reeder of Blacksburg, an Air Force Senior Airman, has arrived for duty as a claims examiner at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska.
She is the daughter of Judith J. Lawrence of Blacksburg and Gary E. Mallery of Radford. She is a 1988 graduate of Radford High School.
Army Pvt. Richard J. Wymer of Shawsville recently completed training at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga.

Army National Guard Pvt. Gordon R. Howard of Shawsville recently completed training at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga.
He is the son of Jean H. Howard of Shawsville and Rich L. Howard of Fairless Hills, Pa., and is a 1993 graduate of Shawsville High School.
Navy Seaman Recruit Jabe H. O'Neill recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, in Great Lakes, Ill.
He is the son of Thomas V. and Jeanie H. O'Neill of Floyd and is a 1990 graduate of Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham.
Navy Seaman Recruit Benjamin J. Erdely recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, in Great Lakes, Ill.
He is the son of Benjamin Erdely of Christiansburg.
Marine Lance Cpl. Theodore J. Taylor was recently promoted to his present rank while serving with Marine Wing Support Squadron 272, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station New River, in Jackson, N.C.
He is the son of Anita F. and Theodore J. Taylor Jr of Dublin and is a 1990 graduate of Pulaski County High School.
Marine 2nd Lt. Nathan M. Rush recently graduated from The Basic School at Quantico.
Rush is the son of Larry D. and Donna G. Rush of Christiansburg. He is a 1990 graduate of Christiansburg High School and a 1994 graduate of Virginia Military Institute.
Marine 1st Lt. Christian D.C. Harshberger recently was promoted to his present rank and reported for flight training at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Richard F. Harshberger of Radford and is a 1988 graduate of Radford High School and a 1992 graduate of Virginia Tech.
Navy Seaman George J. Flick, son of George J. Flick Jr., of Blacksburg, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, in Great Lakes, Ill.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Amy L. Counts, daughter of Robert Counts of Radford, has received the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service as head of the Orthodontic Division at the Naval Dental Clinic in Norfolk.
She is a 1976 graduate of Pulaski County High School and joined the Navy in 1991.
Marine Pfc. Mark C. Pratt, son of Mark W. and Susan L. Pratt of Draper, recently completed the Basic Helicopter Course at the Naval Air Technical Training Center at the Memphis Naval Air Station in Millington, Tenn.
He is a 1994 graduate of Pulaski County High School and joined the Marine Corps in August 1994.
Army Staff Sgt. George A. Lee has received the Eighth U.S. Army Distinguished Leader Award. He is a track vehicle mechanic and is the son of Sadie A. Lee of Christiansburg. He is a 1983 graduate of Christiansburg High School and is stationed in Kitzingen, Germany.
Stephen L. Clower, son of Earl C. and Sandra H. Clower of Pilot, has graduated from U.S. Army warrant officer candidate school in Fort Rucker, Ala. He is a 1986 graduate of Floyd County High School and a 1994 graduate of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Army Spec. David M. Love has graduated from the 58-day Ranger course at Fort Benning, Ga. He is the son of Johnny E. and Constance M. Love of Blacksburg and a 1987 graduate of Blacksburg High School.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Larry D. Harris, son of Larry C. Harris and Bonnie J. Cooper of Narrows, recently reported for duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, homeported in Norfolk. He is a 1988 graduate of Christiansburg High School and joined the Navy in April 1993.
