First Union to join in creating annuity

First Union Insurance Group, a unit of First Union Corp., said Friday it has agreed with Western National Life Insurance Co. to develop a proprietary fixed annuity to be introduced later this year. Western National, based at Houston, is a provider of individual retirement annuities through financial institutions.

The annuity will be sold to First Union customers who are interested in saving for future retirement. First Union expects to add other Western National insurance products to its insurance business.

Bankruptcies

Seven bankruptcies with business affiliations have been filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia at Roanoke. Three of them are personal bankruptcies that the court listed as businesses because they have commercial connections and could be of interest to business creditors and customers.

Andrews Produce Co., a produce wholesaler at Hillsville, filed for liquidation, reporting assets of $53,599 and liabilities of $485,200.

Miled J. Sleiman and Samia A. Sleiman, who operate a convenience store at Blacksburg, asked for liquidation with assets of $14,300 and liabilities of $41,738.

Larry Ernest Gross and Joyce H. Gross of Coeburn sought liquidation with assets and liabilities estimated at less than $50,000 each. Larry Gross operated Economy Home Improvement.

Danny L. Carter and Patricia Gail Carter of Roanoke filed for a wage-earner plan for repayment of debts, listing assets of $68,279 and liabilities of $61,867. Danny Carter owned D. Carter Construction and Remodeling.

Teddie Lamar Willis and Valerie K. Wimmer Willis of Christiansburg filed for liquidation with assets of $20,230 and liabilities of $44,261. They operated Willis Carpeting.

David Frederick Wadey and Holly Alene Wadey of Eagle Rock, trading as Oriskany Enterprises and David's Pressure Washing, sought liquidation. They listed assets of $25,302 and liabilities of $56,617.

Sammy Lee Coulthard of Glade Spring sought liquidation with assets of $92,500 and liabilities of $312,345. He had an interest in Southeast Wheels of Bristol and in Meadowview Mining and Wheels.

Sterile Concepts Holdings Inc., Richmond supplier of surgical trays to hospitals and a former unit of Carilion Health System of Roanoke, said Friday it has signed an $8 million annual contract with Sisters of Mercy Health System of St. Louis. Sterile Concepts will provide surgical and clinical custom procedure trays to 12 hospitals affiliated with Sisters of Mercy, an affiliate of Health Services Corporation of America.

The Maddox Agency, a Roanoke advertising firm, said Friday its MediaMark SE unit will represent WSLS (Channel 10) for its media exposure programs. MediaMark SE specializes in media planning and buying for regional and national firms in the broadcast and print media.
