UVA GOLFERS 2ND IN MAJOR TOURNAMENT

The Virginia Cavaliers tied for second with Texas Sunday after the final round of the prestegious Golf Digest Collegiate Invitational played at the Tournament Players Course at The Woodlands, Texas.

Virginia was led by Simon Cooke, who tied for fourth in the individual standings, and freshman Lewis Chitengwa was sixth.

Cooke shot 74-72-70-216 and tied with Chris Tidland of Oklahoma State. Chitengwa shot 74-73-74-217.

Second-ranked Oklahoma State had four players in the top seven and won the team title by 18 strokes with a three-round total of 860, a tournament record. Texas and Virginia were at 878, followed by North Carolina at 883.

The Cowboys' Alan Bratton and Trip Kuehne, the 1994 U.S. Amateur runner-up, shared the individual title at 213.

Sean Radebaugh had five goals and five assists and defending national champion Salisbury State pounded Roanoke 30-8 in a men's lacrosse game Sunday in Salem.

The Sea Gulls (3-0) extended their regular-season winning streak to 40 games. Their last loss in the regular season was to Roanoke March 8, 1992.

The Maroons' 30 goals given up was the most in school history. The previous high was 29 goals to Hobart in the 1986 NCAA playoffs. J.J. Blatt led the Maroons (2-1) with three goals.

Ande Jenkins and Scott Mackley scored four goals each and Washington and Lee beat Trinity (Conn.) 16-6 in the championship of the W&L Lacrosse Tournament in Lexington.

The score was 3-3 with 13:38 remaining in the second quarter when the seventh-ranked Generals (4-0) scored 10 straight goals, including three by junior midfielder by Adam Butterworth, to put the Bantams (1-1) away.

Randolph-Macon (2-2) defeated Swarthmore (0-3) in the consolation game 13-9 behind four goals by Ryan Traynor.

In Ferrum, Keith Mayhew improved his record to 4-0 as the Panthers split a doubleheader with Davis and Elkins in college baseball, winning the first game 3-2 and dropping the second 5-3.

In the opener went 2-for-4 and scored the winning run from second base on Jason Wilson's single to right field in the seventh inning. John Poindexter went 2-for-3 with an RBI double for Ferrum.

In the second game, Jimmy Hamilton (2-1) took his first loss for the Panthers ((9-3). John Blackburn (2-1) picked up the victory for Davis & Elkins (3-5).

Georgia Southern scored 11 runs on 13 hits on its way to an 11-3 win over VMI in a Southern Conference baseball game at Lexington.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Eagles (14-4 overall, 6-0 conference) exploded for six runs on six hits in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The Keydets aided Georgia Southern's cause, commiting two errors in the fourth inning and six in the game.

Romando Harrison went 3-for-4 with an RBI for VMI (5-11, 3-6). Jay Adams (0-2) took the loss for the Keydets.

Brian Powell threw a two-hit shutout as Georgia defeated Radford 6-0 in a baseball game at Athens, Ga. Powell pitched a complete game, striking out 12 as the Highlanders lost their fifth straight contest. Eric Harris (1-2) took the loss for Radford (5-9). Both Highlander hits came from right-fielder Bill Brennan.
