ADVOCACY EFFORT TARGETS TOBACCO PRODUCTS

Thirty-eight high school students from the New River Valley gathered in Richmond Feb. 24-26 for the Southwest Virginia Youth Advocacy Training program.

The students learned and discussed effective methods to advocate stricter tobacco controls in their schools and communities as well as the state of Virginia. Speakers addressed the issues of VIrginia politics, tobacco control in Southwest Virginia and teen advocacy.

While touring the Capitol, the students got a greeting from Del. Morgan Griffith, R-Salem, who was on a quick break from a General Assembly meeting.

In small groups, the students planned how to present their new ideas to the rest of the student body, brainstorming campaign names and possible opening events. They hope to extend the limits of the schools' smoke-free environment to include all school grounds and campaign against the abuse of chewing tobacco.

Regina Meredith, an English teacher and adviser to the Teens Need Teens peer support group, who also attended the training, said the students left the conference with a good idea of how to propose and support legislation and the importance of committee work. "That they can actually plan something for themselves and the community is the most meaningful," she said.

The students in attendance from the New River Valley were:

Auburn High School: Stacie Boothe, Dana Garnand, Erin Bull, Emily Trivette, Jeremy Cultice, Tim Smith, Amber Croy, Nathaniel Reed, Jack Angert, Anilia Angert, Amber Tannenbaum, Jennifer Lyons.

Prices Fork Elementary pupils more than doubled their collective READING MONTH goal of reading for 100,000 minutes in February.

For every 100 minutes of reading, faculty members added a piece to a large mystery puzzle on a bulletin board display. The first classes to guess the puzzle subject, Carol Hall's first-grade and Laura Sexton's fifth-grade, received a set of paperback books.

Other Reading Month activities included guest readers, Drop Everything and Read times, shared reading across grade levels and making posters and book jackets to advertise favorite books.

Principal Dollie Cottrill, who promised to perform a student-selected activity if the goal were met, dressed as a clown for a school assembly March 3.
