MAN CHARGED IN JEWELRY STORE BREAK-IN

Police have charged a Radford man with breaking into a downtown jewelry shop and stealing several thousands dollars worth of rings and watches.

The break-in at Wall's Jewelers on Norwood Street happened early Saturday and was discovered by a postal employee going to work, said Deputy Chief Jonny Butler.

Entry was gained by breaking out a plate-glass display window, Butler said. After a short investigation, officers charged Eric Lawrence Phillips, 36, with grand larceny and breaking and entering. Phillips lives at Alleghany Apartments on Norwood Street, Butler said.

Police recovered about $1,300 worth of stolen jewelry during the investigation, Butler said.

Phillips is being held without bond in the Radford City Jail. He was arraigned on the charges Monday in General District Court and was appointed an attorney. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 10.
