The principals also tabled a decision on whether to move the Blue Ridge from Region III to Region IV until after Virginia High School League member schools decide on a proposal of whether or not to count freshmen in a school's enrollment when determining membership in a classification.
William Byrd principal Bob Patterson moved to not accept Christiansburg and Blacksburg because, when the Blue Ridge District met with Region IV principals last summer, there seemed to be a feeling that any move by the Blue Ridge would result in either three districts of six schools or a split of six-five-seven. In that alignment, Blacksburg and Christiansburg were placed in the Southwest District with Grundy, Tazewell, Graham and Richlands.
``We should stick with that decision,'' Patterson said. ``Also, it is premature to accept Blacksburg and Christiansburg and force other schools to have a great deal of travel [in their district schedules].''
The principals passed a motion by Lord Botetourt principal Jim Sledd to table a decision on the Blue Ridge District's move because some schools may drop from Group AA to Group A after the enrollment issue is decided later this week at VHSL meetings in Lynchburg.
If this is done, the balance would be more equitable, though not perfect, between regions III and IV.
