Men are much more eager than women to see the size of government whacked down.
GENDER
Most whites want to see government smaller; most blacks don't.
RACE
Generation Xers are the only age group that would rather see government bigger. Generally, enthusiasim for smaller government rises with age.
AGE
The more education we have, the smaller we want government to be. But once we've been to grad school, our enthusiasm for bigger government is rekindled - slightly.
EDUCATION
The more money we make, the more eager we are to see government do less for us.
INCOME
Almost half of Democrats want to see bigger government, but 7 of 10 Republicans want to see it smaller. Guess that's why we have elections, huh? If it's up to the independents, though, they'll side with Republicans on the size-of-government question.
PARTY AFFILIATION
The Roanoke Valley Poll was conducted by Roanoke College's Center for Community Research. The poll surveyed 400 Roanoke Valley residents and has a margin of error of 5 percentage points. Among demographic subgroups, the margin may be higher.
