CAVALIERS HAMMER ORANGEMEN

Tony Nugent and Doug Knight each scored three goals as No.2 Virginia defeated No.1 Syracuse 15-7 Tuesday night in a rematch of teams that met in last year's lacrosse Final Four.

Host Syracuse (2-1) led just once when Roy Colsey scored the first goal of the game with 11:23 left in the first period.

Virginia (3-0) then answered with three straight goals. Knight, Nugent and Tim Whiteley scored for the Cavaliers, but the Orangemen pulled to 3-2 after Jim Morrissey found the net on an assist from Paul Sullivan at the 11:51 mark of the second quarter.

The Cavs then went on a 5-0 run to close out the first half. David Jones had two goals in the run, and Grey Treynor, Andrew Dausch and Nugent all scored unassisted for an 8-2 halftime lead.

Nugent's third goal came in the second half to extend Virginia's lead to nine goals. Syracuse got one back but could get no closer.

Colsey had three goals to lead Syracuse.

Bates Brown gave up two runs in over seven innings and went 3-for-4 at the plate to lift Washington and Lee past Eastern Mennonite 4-2 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball game in Lexington.

Freshman outfielder Chris Warren's single drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as Campbell defeated VMI 6-3 in a non-conference baseball game in Buies Creek, N.C.

Darin Blood hurled a five-hit shutout as Gonzaga defeated Virginia Tech 5-0 in the second round of the Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif.

Blood scattered five singles and struck out seven, including the side in the ninth after giving up a leadoff single. The Bulldogs (7-6) got six of their 12 hits from Ryan Branch and Matt Brunell. Both players went 3-for-5 and scored twice.

The Hokies (5-4) got three hits from Kevin Barker and two from former William Byrd standout Josh Herman to account for all five hits.

Scott Schroeffel went 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace 10th-ranked Tennessee past Radford 9-3 in a non-conference baseball game in Knoxville, Tenn.

Bryce Christensen also went 2-for-4 and freshman John Alkire picked up his second win, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out four in six innings of work. Schroeffel hit a two-run single in the first as the Vols (11-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Roanoke opened the women's lacrosse season with an 18-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Guilford College (0-1).

Kirsten Wagner, Gayle Avery and Allie Oglesby each scored three goals for the Maroons, who outshot the Quakers 34-7.

Tickets for the Group AA state basketball semifinals at Liberty University's Vines Center in Lynchburg will be on sale at Northside High School for $6. The Vikings take on Caroline on Friday at 2:45 p.m. after Liberty takes on Nansemond River at 1 p.m.

Anyone wishing to purchase tickets should contact Northside athletic director Ed Deeds or bookkeeper Debbie Trolsen in the office.

The seventh annual football recruit night sponsored by the Pulaski County Hokie Club will be held at the meeting room of the Comfort Inn in Dublin Thursday starting with a 6:30 p.m. social. Speaker Ricky Bustle, Virginia Tech's offensive coordinator, and other members of the Tech staff will being the program at 7:15.

The program includes a highlight film of the 1994 season, profiles of members of the new recruiting class and a discussion of the upcoming spring practice. Cost is $3 at the door.
