SWAT BRINGS BACK HONORS FROM ROANOKE

The Southwest Aquatic Team made some waves at the recent United States Swimming B/C Championships at the Carter Center in Roanoke.

The meet was for registered U.S.S. swimmers age 8-and-under and those age 9 and above without a "BB" standard time for a particular stroke.

Eight-year old YVONNE NG won three events: 25-meter freestyle, 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke. She set SWAT records in the freestyle and butterfly.

PAUL MOORE, STAN HARVEY and DANNY DARVALICS swept the top three places in Boys 8-and-under 50 freestyle. Moore also set a Blacksburg Sunfish team record in the 25 breaststroke where he finished second. And he was second in the 25 butterfly, third in the 25 backstroke and 50 butterfly and fourth in the 25 freestyle.

Harvey won the 100 freestyle and was third in the 100 individual medley (I.M.). Darvalics was third in the 50 breaststroke and fourth in the 25 breaststroke. And JOHN BAILEY came in fourth in the 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly.

Another 17 swimmers also had top four finishes.

In the Boys 12-and-under, JAMES CLARK was second in the 100 I.M. and fourth in the 200 freestyle. ELLIOT SMITH was fourth in the 50 backstroke. And BRIAN SCHIED was fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

In the Boys 12-and-under, JOEY RYDER won the 100 freestyle and 100 I.M., was third in the 50 butterfly and fourth in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle. NORBERT HUBER won the 100 breaststroke, came in second in the 100 backstroke, third in four other events: 100 and 200 I.M. as well as 200 and 500 freestyle.

In the Boys 13-and-under, CARSON SAUNDERS won the 500 freestyle, was second in the 200 backstroke, third in the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 I.M. and fourth in the 400 I.M. RODERICK COX won the 100 freestyle, came in second in the 200 and 500 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke. DAVID SZABO placed third in the 200 and 500 freestyle and 200 breaststroke and fourth in the 50 freestyle and 200 I.M. And ERIK STEPHENS took second place in the 50 and 100 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle.

In Girls 10-and-under, RACHEL DRYE came in second in the 100 I.M. and third in the 50 breaststroke while HOLLY RYDER was third in the 50 butterfly.

In Girls 12-and-under, ANNIE MOORE won the 100-backstroke and 200 I.M., was second in he 500 freestyle and third in the 50 backstroke and 100 I.M. NICHOLE CHAN was third in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 100 breaststroke. And BETH TYNAN was fourth in the 50 breaststroke and 100 I.M.

In the Girls 13-and-over, JOHANNA MOORE won the 200 I.M., placed second in the 200 butterfly and third in the 200 breaststroke. SARAH BRUNNER finished second in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, third in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 400 I.M. KRISTEN EASTER came in second in the 500 freestyle, third in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 100 backstroke.

ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP: New River Community College captured its first Virginia Community College Western Region basketball tournament last weekend at Pulaski's Hensel Eckman YMCA.

The Knights took the title with a 113-111 overtime win over Southwest Virginia C.C. of Richlands.

NRCC point guard RYAN BLACKBURN hit the second free throw of two - after missing the first one - to break a deadlock at 111. CHAD OWEN added another free throw. Then the Knights withstood a last second shot.

Blackburn led six players in double-figures with 25 points. ASH BURROWS scored 25, PA NJIO 20, KEN WOOD 15, JIMMY CARMICHEL 14 and Owen 13.

"We played today like we knew we were capable," said NRCC coach JACK LEAHY. "Before today, we lost the close games down the stretch."

The Knights (4-8) entered the five-team tournament seeded fifth with just one win. But Patrick Henry C.C. of Martinsville forfeited the play-in game. Then NRCC upset previously unbeaten Virginia Western C.C. of Roanoke 125-116 in the semifinals as Burrows scored 42 points.

The win gave New River a berth in the state community college tournament in Richmond.

The Terminators (9-2) captured the Pulaski Girls 11-and-under league tournament title, edging the Lady Braves 21-20 as BREANNA MOORE hit the winning basket in the final seconds.

LINDSEY RATCLIFF brought the Terminators back in the closing minutes with a three-pointer and a layup. She finished with 11 points.

Both teams tied for the regular season championship. League MVP honors were shared by Ratliff, ERIN JOHNSTON of the Raiders and JODY LAWSON of the Big Blue.

The Warriors (14-0) added the tournament title to their regular season crown in the Pulaski Girls 15-and-under league.

The Warriors edged the Lakers 38-33. MELISSA BLEVINS hit four consecutive free throws down the stretch to seal the win as the Warriors extended their winning streak to 29 games over two seasons.

MANDY MOORE paced the Warriors with 13 points while Blevins added 12.

KRISTEN ADKINS led the Lakers with 27 points and finished the season with a league-record 239 points.

Blevins, Adkins and AMBER HANKS of the Bulls shared the league MVP award. Blevins became the third player to win back-to-back awards.

Corning (8-0) finished the regular season in the Montgomery County Men's League unbeaten. TIM PENN (15) and DAWES BLEVINS (13) combined for 28 points in a 63-55 win over the Purple People Eaters.

Then Above the Rim (4-4) got 61 points fromCHUCK COURTS (32) and DARYL PRICE (29) as it beat Purple People Eaters 102-79 to finish second.

Courts led the league in scoring at 28.3 points per game.

SHAWN MCMILLAN of Corning hit a league-high 21 three-pointers.

SIGN-UP WHILE SHOPPING: The Radford Plaza K-Mart in Fairlawn will be the site of Little League baseball sign-ups for the Riverlawn Recreation Department in Pulaski County.

T-Ball and baseball leagues will be for youth between ages 6 and 15.

Registrations will be held Friday at 5-8 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

ON TARGET: Triangle Archers of Blacksburg will hold another the last two of its indoor winter tournaments Saturday and on March 25 at 10 a.m.-8 p.m.

Single-spot and 5-spot National Field Archery Targets will be used. The fee is $6 for the first round and $3 for each additional round.

SPORTS CLUBBING IT: The Pulaski County Hokie Club will hold its Seventh Annual Football Recruit Night at the Dublin Comfort Inn on Friday.

The program will feature RICKY BUSTLE Tech's offensive coordinator. Also, the highlight film of the 1994 season will be shown and profiles of the new recruits discussed.

The social begins at 6:30 p.m. with the program getting underway at 7:15. Admission is $3 at the door.
