HOKIES KNOCK OFF NO.14 NEVADA, 5-4

Sal Colangelo drove in four runs and Sean Hummel pitched 72/3 strong innings as Virginia Tech's baseball team beat 14th-ranked Nevada 10-5 in the third round of the Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic Wednesday at Fresno State's Beiden Field.

Colangelo, a junior leftfielder, belted a three-run home run to right field to give Tech (6-4) a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning. He drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.

Hummel (2-0) scattered eight hits in picking up the win.

In other sports in the region:

Chad Maddox hit a game-tying grand slam in the top of the eighth inning and doubled in the winning run in a 10-run 10th as Ferrum rallied past Guilford 16-6 in a college baseball game at Greensboro, N.C.

The Panthers' 10-run outburst was fueled by five hits, three walks and three consecutive hit batters. Maddox tied the score at 6 with his second grand slam of the year. Kevin Anderson (2-0) got the win on the mound for Ferrum (10-3).

R.A. Dickey pitched 82/3 innings to pick up his second win as Tennessee (12-4) defeated Radford 5-4 at Knoxville. Designated hitter Jeff Dean led the Highlanders at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

VMI officials announced Wednesday the inaugural Star City Lacrosse Classic will pit the Keydets against Radford April 4 in Roanoke. The game, which is being promoted by the Roanoke Chapter of the VMI Alumni Association, is free and will take place at 7 p.m. at the River's Edge Sports Complex.

In Gambrills, Md., B.J. Forte and Corey Fenley scored two goals each to lead Radford past Fairfield 7-5 in a men's lacrosse game. Goalie Sean Keneally made 18 saves to earn the victory for Radford (1-1).

Heather Gardner scored three goals and became the second player in Richmond women's lacrosse history to score 100 career points as the Spiders routed Virginia Tech 14-1 at Richmond.

In Tallahassee, Fla., Virginia Tech's Dave Hannett is in third place in the decathlon after the first day of competition at the Florida State Invitational. Hannett, whose 3,448 points are 22 short of second place, finished third in the 100-meter dash (11.24 seconds).

Mike Ramsden of Lynchburg College shot an even-par 72 to earn medalist honors and lead the Hornets to the team title at the Emory & Henry/ODAC Invitational at the Glen Rochie Country Club in Emory. Lynchburg won the team event with a four-man total of 312. Washington and Lee was at 316, Emory & Henry was third with 325 and Roanoke fourth with 343.
