HERE COMES R2D2'S NEWEST CHALLENGER

Cybermotion Inc., a Salem manufacturer of mobile robots used in nuclear, security and clean-room settings, has begun shipping a new mobile robotic platform called the K3A. The platform complements the company's K2A platform, which has been marketed since 1984.

The new model has six wheels, which are tucked more under the unit's base than the three wheels of the K2A, giving the unit more stability and the ability to venture into tighter hallways than can the K2A. Turrets equipped to perform a variety of jobs can be fitted atop the platform. The first K3A was produced for the U.S. Department of Energy's Morgantown Energy Technology Center and will be used for routine inspection of drums of low-level nuclear waste.
