Mountain climber to speak March 23

BLACKSBURG - International mountain climber and author Lou Whittaker will speak and present a slide show in Pamplin Hall room 30 on the Virginia Tech campus Thursday, March 23, at 7 p.m.

Whittaker has scaled Mt. Everest, the Peruvian Andes, and other mountains.

His visit is sponsored by Blacksburg's Parks and Recreation department, Jansport, the University Bookstore, Virginia Tech Outing Club, and Blue Ridge Outdoors.

Thrift shop taking donations

BLACKSBURG - With the season for Spring cleaning coming on, the YMCA Thrift Shop will accept donations of clothing, furniture, household items, paperback books, toys, sports equipment and linens.

Proceeds will support YMCA programs throughout Montgomery County, including tutoring for children, home repair for low-income families, or leadership development for Virginia Tech students.

Donation hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Gables Shopping Center.

Allen encouraging `Operation Spruce-Up'

Gov. George Allen is encouraging all Virginians to participate in "Operation Spruce-Up," April 1-23.

This first annual effort is sponsored by eight state agencies. Many state-owned sites will offer volunteer opportunities, including trail clean-up, painting, building repair, construction and landscaping.
