ALFRED C. ANDERSON JR., son of Alfred C. and Ann R. Anderson of Vinton, has completed basic training with the Army National Guard at Fort Leonard E. Wood in Waynesville, Mo.

Anderson is a 1990 graduate of William Byrd High School.

MARINE CPL. JOHN L. STEPHENS, son of Johnny and Wanda Stephens of Salem, recently was promoted to his present rank while serving at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Stephens is a 1993 graduate of Salem High School.

PFC. JOSHUA S. AKERS, son of Steven D. Akers and Joan B. Akers, both of Roanoke, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was promoted to his present rank.

He is a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

CHIEF PETTY OFFICER ROBIN S. HOLDREN, daughter of Walter J. Holdren of Roanoke, recently received a letter of commendation for superior performance of duty while assigned at Naval Station, Norfolk.

The 1979 graduate of Northside High School is also a 1990 graduate of Park College, Parkville, Mo.

STAFF SGT. VINCENT D. DAVIS, son of Sally M. Davis of Roanoke, recently graduated from the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, Santa Ana, Calif.

He is a 1975 graduate of William Byrd High School.

PFC. LAURA D. HARTWELL, daughter of Debra E. Hinchee of Roanoke, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.and was promoted to her present rank.

She is a 1990 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS JASON T. JAMIESON, son of Timothy L. and Virginia V. Jamieson of Roanoke, recently received a letter of commendation for superior performance of duty while assigned aboard the destroyer USS Comte De Grasse, which is docked in Norfolk.

He is a 1988 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

CPL. CHRISTOPHER L. AEBERSOLD, son of Carole F. Redmon of Louisville, recently promoted to his present rank while serving at Fort Knox, Ky.

He is a 1991 graduate of Salem High School.

PVT. JOSEPH H. ROWELL, son of Joseph H. and Diane L. Rowell of Moneta, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.

He is a 1994 graduate of William Byrd High School.

MARINE PFC. ROBERT S. GRAYBILL, son of Robert H. Graybill and Cheryl Graybill, both of Blue Ridge, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C. and was meritoriously promoted to his present rank.

PVT. MARK S. WINSTEAD, son of Eve F. Wirt of Troutville and Richard S. Winstead of Roanoke, has completed basic training at Fort Leonard E. Wood, Waynesville, Mo.

Winstead is a 1992 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

AIRMAN DAVID P. ILGENFRITZ, son of Patricia B. Ilgenfritz of Salem, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

He is a 1994 graduate of Salem High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT CRYSTAL D. RICHARDS, daughter of Charles T. and Kathleen H. Richards of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

LT. S. MARSHALL LAUCK, son of San Kummer and Claude Lauck, both of Roanoke, has been named a designated faculty candidate at the United States Naval Academy. He is a May 1994 graduate of the academy and is stationed at Quantico, Virginia.

MARINE LANCE CPL. PAUL A. WILLEFORD, son of Thomas H. and Carol A. Willeford of Roanoke, has returned from operations to rescue Haitian migrants in the Caribbean Sea. Willeford is a 1990 graduate of William Fleming High School.

NAVY SEAMAN ROY D. DeCOSTER, son of Deborah S. Covell of Roanoke, has returned from duty off the coast of Haiti and Cuba with the Navy Hospital Ship USNS Comfort. DeCoster is a 1989 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS NEWTON D. HIGH of Roanoke has returned from duty off the coast of Haiti and Cuba with the Navy Hospital Ship USNS Comfort. High is a 1976 graduate of Patrick Henry High School and a 1981 graduate of Wake Forest University.

ELECTRICIAN'S MATE JASON CREWS, son of Dawson and Elaine Crews of Roanoke, has reported for duty as a nuclear power electrical operator on the submarine USS Santa Fe and will be stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Crews is a 1992 graduate of William Byrd High School.

STAFF SGT. LEWIS D. HARTMAN of Roanoke, was among 300 soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines honored by the Korean-American Friendship Association during a holiday season party held in Seoul, Korea. Hartman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis O. Hartman of Boones Mill, is a military police officer, assigned to the 188th Military Police Company, Camp Walker, Taegu.

AIRMAN CHARLES M. MILLS, son of Linda H. Thompson of Roanoke, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Mills is a 1994 graduate of William Byrd High School.

AIRMAN FELICIA M. GOODLEY, daughter of Dora V. Campbell of Roanoke, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Goodley is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

MARINE PVT. JOSEPH D. WEAVER, son of Ken and Darlene Weaver of Eagle Rock, recently completed recruit training at Parrish Island, S.C. Weaver is a 1994 graduate of James River High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT SHELLY D. MATTOX, daughter of Darbell E. and Virginia M. Mattox of Troutville, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. Mattox is a 1993 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

NAVY AIRMAN BRADLEY WALKER, son of Janet R. Walker of Salem, recently received a letter of appreciation for superior performance of duty while assigned at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk.

Walker is a 1989 graduate of Glenvar High School.

CHIEF MASTER SGT. LAWRENCE M. VERNON, son of Barbara G. Vernon of Roanoke, received a third Meritorious Service Medal at a ceremony announcing his retirement. The medal is awarded for outstanding noncombat meritorious achievement for service to the United States.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS KEITH A. MCDANIEL, son of Jack H. and Sue S. McDaniel of Salem, recently received the Navy Good Conduct Medal. This award recognizes the service member's honest and faithful service during a four-year period. McDaniel is a 1989 graduate of Salem High School.

MARINE PVT. JAMES J. BROUGHMAN, son of Charlie J. and JoAnn Broughman of Troutville, recently completed recruit training. Broughman is a 1994 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

MARINE PFC. JUSTIN J. BARHAM, son of Robert T. and Wendola P. Barham of Salem, recently completed recruit training. Barham is a 1990 graduate of Salem High School.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT COREY L. MCCRAW, daughter of Eadie F. McCraw of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. McCraw is a 1994 graduate of Northside High School.

MARINE CLP. TODD W. TOPPEL and MARINE CLP. JAY C. HOGAN recently were promoted to their present rank while serving with 4th Combat Engineer Battalion in Lynchburg.

Toppel, son of Elroy W. and Nancy D. Toppel of Roanoke, is a 1988 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School. Hogan, son of Jerry L. and Betty B. Hogan of Roanoke, is a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

THE JOSHUA LAWRENCE CHAMBERLAIN CAMP NO. 20 SONS OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR was presented with its Camp Flag by the 2nd Brigade, 80th Division, United States Army Reserve during a recent ceremony in Salem. Robert J. Eck is camp commander.

The group is named after the Union hero of the Battle of Gettysburg and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, established in 1881, are descendents of Union Army, Navy and Marine veterans.

SGT. CHRISTOPHER R. DILLON, son of Bob and Emma Lou Dillon of Goodview, recently was promoted to his present rank while at Fort Gordon, Ga. Dillon is a 1987 graduate of Cave Spring High School and a 1991 graduate of Radford University.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS CURTIS L. THAXTON of Daleville recently re-enlisted for four years while serving in Quantico.

Thaxton is a 1987 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

MARINE LANCE CPL. BRITT L. STACEY, son of Lee H. and Eulise M. Stacey of Vinton, recently received a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service while assigned at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

A Meritorious Mast is an official recognition from a Marine's commanding officer for superior individual performance.

Stacey is a 1989 graduate of William Byrd High School.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT STEPHANIE M. BILBRO, daughter of retired Air Force Tech. Sgt. and Mrs. Gary M. Bilbro of Buchanan, recently completed basic training at Great Lakes, Ill.

Bilbro is a 1993 graduate of James River High School.
