VIARS, Julius L., 70, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday morning, March 15, 1995 in Pembroke, Va. Mr. Viars was born on September 11, 1923 in Radford, Va. and was a son of the late James and Frances Viars. Mr. Viars was also preceded in death by his sister Peggy Boyd. He is survived by four daughters, Sandra V. Robertson, of Pearisburg, Cheril V. Pulliam, of Roxboro, N.C., Anita V. Lucas, of Pearisburg, and Carrie Viars, of Maybrook; two sons, Randy L. Viars, of Radford, and Wayne C. Viars, of Newport; two sisters, Louise Stewart, of Smith Mtn. Lake, and Geraldine Coulson, of Radford; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 17, 1995 at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, Va. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home.

ALMOND, Reginald Surpelle Sr., 52, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 1995, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Salem. He was born April 7, 1942, in Gladys, a son of Surpelle Morgan Almond and Jennie Mitchell Almond of Gladys. He was a graduate of William Campbell High School, attended Bluefield College and served in the U.S. Navy for 8 years having served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the Kedron Baptist Church, the D.A.V., the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of the American Legion. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Rainey Reynolds Almond; one daughter, Lynn Almond Eggers, Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Reginald S. Almond Jr., Norfolk; three sisters, Joyce Almond Brown, Shipman, Agnes Almond Dickerson, Harrisonburg, Linda Almond Quillen, Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, March 17, 1995, from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford. Interment, with military honors conducted by V.F.W. Post #4165 and D.A.V. Chapter #46 will follow in the Kedron Baptist Church Cemetery, Gladys. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

ARTHUR, Sam Washington, 84, of Moneta, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 1995, in Friendship Manor. He was born February 22, 1911 in Bedford County, a son of the late Jesse Thomas Arthur and Hyatt Victoria Ashwell Arthur. He was a retired carpenter and was a member of the Palestine Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Forlines Arthur; two daughters and son-in-law, Mary A. Pagans, Salem, Eve A. and Jerry Goode, Huddleston; a son and daughter-in-law, Jesse B. and Maurleen Arthur, Huddleston; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 17, 1995 at 2:30 p.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Huddleston by The Rev. Christopher Fowler. COOK, Bonnie Yopp 79, of Shawsville, died Wednesday March 15, 1995. A native of Montgomery County, she was the daughter for the late Andrew Jackson Yopp and Zinna Walters Yopp. Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Jacob Cook, Sr.; sisters, Lena Simmons, Myrtle Palmer, Bessie Dillon, Ora Wood; and a brother, Charlie Yopp, Sr. Survivors include a daughter, Roxy Caroline Cook, Shawsville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jacob Jr. and Deborah Cook, Christiansburg; two brothers, George Yopp, Salem, Roy Yopp, Madison Heights; grandson, Robert Dwayne Cook; step-grandchildren, Jackie McCallister, Eric McCallister, Christina McCallister, Samatha Mills, Melanie Sprouse; and many nieces and nephews. CRUICKSHANK, John P. 94, of South Charleston, W. Va., died Tuesday, March 14, 1995. Formerly of Roanoke and Huntington, W. Va., he was a retired General Superintendent of Transmission and Distribution for Appalachian Power Company, Roanoke. Mr. Cruickshank was a past chairman of the Roanoke School Board and a retired Colonel in the United States Army with the Legion of Merit Honor. He was a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge, Kazim Temple, Shrine AAONMS, Roanoke, Sigma Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonary, Schenectady, N. Y. He was a graduate of Texas A and M, a registered professional Engineer in Va. and W. Va. A former member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, Roanoke and a present member of First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston, W. Va. Surviving are his son, Robert J. Cruickshank, S. Charleston, W. Va.; foster son, Fred W. Conner, San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston, W. Va. Funeral services will be conducted l p.m. Saturday, at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. David A. Kirk. Masonic rites will be presented by the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge. ELMORE, Margaret Coreen, 78, of New Castle, died Wednesday, March 15, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Bruce Elmore and a daughter Joan Elmore. She is survived by two sons, Larry Elmore and wife Eva, of Irmo, S.C. and Jimmy Elmore and wife Wendy, of Longwood, Fla.; daughters, Janie Webb, of Salem, Carole Vasquez, of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Francis Ohmer, of Norfolk; sisters, Virginia K. (Kitty) Hash, of Ocala, Fla.; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home Chapel Salem. FIX, John Baxter, (``Bud""), 89, of Lexington, died Tuesday, March 14, 1995, at Shenandoah Valley Health Care Facility, Buena Vista. Born March 23, 1905, in Rockbridge Co., he was the son of the late John Baxter Fix and Margaret Brown Beatty Fix. Mr. Fix was a member Emeritus of Mt. View Ruritan Club, Ebenezer A.R.P. Church and was a retired carpenter with Washington & Lee University. Surviving are wife, Virginia Camper Fix, Lexington; stepdaughter, Betty Coulter, Hampton; stepson and wife, Earl R. and Jeanne Lawhorne, Savannah, Ga.; stepdaughter-in-law, Ann Lawhorne, Summerfield, N.C.; brother, Thomas Eugene Fix, Lexington, niece, Juanita Kidwell, Gaithersburg, M.D.; nine stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. HANSBARGER, John Henry 76 of Altavista, formerly of Rich Creek, died Wednesday, March 15, 1995, at Altavista care center. Born September 22, 1918 at Pearisburg, he was the son of the late John Henry and Clara Adair Hansbarger, Sr., Mr. Hansbarger was a retired employee of the Hoechst Celanese Corp., Narrows, Va. and former Mayor of Rich Creek. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Princeton, W. Va. and was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Mae White Hansbarger in 1964. Survivors include two daughters; Mrs. John (Charlotte) Meadows, Altavista, and Mrs. Randy (Trish) Martin, Radford; one son, John Henry Hansbarger III, Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Betty Warren, Princeton, W. Va.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 17, 1995 at the Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Rich Creek, with R. H. Walton Jr., officiating. HOBACK, Odell William, 87, of Rt. 2 Wytheville, died Tuesday, March 14, 1995 at his residence. He was retired from the Radford Arsenal. He is survived by two daughters, Lucille Buchanan, Margaret Krunich, both of Wytheville; two sons, Bill Hoback, Jack R. Hoback, both of Wytheville; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild also survive. JENNINGS, Willie Frances Hollingsworth 79, of Route 2, Pulaski, died Tuesday evening, March 14, 1995, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born September 12, 1915 in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late John Walker Hollingsworth and Florence Quesenberry Hollingsworth. She was a member of the Dora Highway Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Troy Luther Jennings; one son, Dallas Glenwood Jennings, Pulaski County; one daughter, Mrs. James ""Wanda"" Morehead, Pulaski County; two sisters, Mrs. Audrey ""Lillie"" Flinchum, Snowville, Mrs. Clarence ""Edith"" Wilson of Fairlawn; and three grandchildren, Gary Wayne Jennings, Heidi Marie-Frances Jennings, James Allen Morehead, Jr., all of Pulaski County. JOHNSON, Annie Russ, 78, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 13, 1995. Survivors include her husband, James M. Johnson Sr.; three sons, James M. (Yvonne) Johnson Jr., George E. Johnson, Kenneth W. (Deborah) Johnson, all of Roanoke; four daughters, Leanna C. (Isaac T.) Willis, of Silver Spring, Md., Carolyn L. (Donald) Jarvis, of New York, Iness J. (Lloyd) Gray, and Gail Small, both of Roanoke; one brother, Lloyd M Russ Sr., of Salem; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one special niece, Inez Russ, of Roanoke; three special nephews, Lloyd M. LEONARD, John Martin Jr., 69, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, March 14, 1995, in a local hospital. He was retired from General Electric and a member of BPOE Elks Club, a member of the Rotary Club, and a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth A. (Betty) Leonard; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Frank Greenway, Roanoke; and their children, Marcy Corbin, Mary Elizabeth, Matthew, Joseph, and Melissa Greenway, all of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Mark Steven and Barbara Atkinson, Gibsonville, N.C.; brother, Robert Leonard, Massachusetts. MYERS, Paul Franklin, 83, of 10716 Rives Ave., McKenney, died Tuesday, March 14, 1995 in the Southside Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Fairfax County and a son of the late Howard Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Neff Myers. Mr. Myers was a retired teacher in the Virginia Public School System, a former Councilman and Mayor of McKenney, former Commissioner of the Richmond Petersburg Turnpike Authority, former member of Dinwiddie-Petersburg Crimesolvers, former member of Appomattox Soil and Water Conservation Authority , Owner of Paul F. Myers Real Estate Company and McKenney Dairy Freeze, member and former Steward of Asbury United Methodist Church, member of McKenney Ruritian Club and the American Legion Post #149. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Rose Zehmer Myers; three sisters, Rebecca M. Early, of McKenney, Hazel M. Ralston, of Lanham, Md., and Ruby M. Philpot, of Newberry, Fla.; two step sons, Richmond T. Zehmer Jr., of Petersburg, and Thomas G. Zehmer, of Dallas, Texas; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. NEWBERRY, Stephen McCarty, 46, of Route 1, Bland, died Tuesday, March 14, 1995, from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was a correctional officer at the Bland Correction Center. He was a strong supporter of all Bland County Athletic Activities. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Wright Newberry. He is survived by two sons, Wendell Aaron Newberry, Robert Allan Newberry; father, Wendell Newberry; sister, Mary Catherine Strock, all of Bland; brother, Paul Chapman Newberry of Abingdon; aunt, Judy Sharp of Carrllton, Miss.; two special friends, Nancey and Whitney Gamble. WOOD, Loine Felty, 83, of 365 Rash St., Wytheville, died Monday, March 13, 1995, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was the widow of Henry W. Wood and was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Bucky Sharitz of Wytheville; stepsons and wives, Charles E. Wood of Silver Spring, Md., William L. and Ruth Wood of Bland, Ronnie L. and Shirley Wood of Severn, Md.; one sister, Louise Mayberry; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Steve Ridenhour, with the interment to follow in the St. John's Luteran Cemetery.
