KEYDETS TAKE FALL ON MATS

None of VMI's five wrestlers advanced in Thursday morning's action at the NCAA championships in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Keydets' Kevin Johnson lost 5-3 to Michigan State's Dan Wirnsberger at 158 pounds.

Eighth-seeded Charlie Branch was beaten 6-4 at 142 pounds, VMI's Aaron Mickiewicz dropped a 15-6 decision at 126, Adam Mickiewicz fell 4-1 at 134 and Jeremy Ingram was pinned in 2:13 at 150.

Virginia Tech's baseball game during the Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif., was delayed for more than two hours Thursday evening after a bank of lights behind home plate failed to function. The game did not resume until after midnight Eastern Standard Time with the Hokies trailing Portland 4-3 in the seventh inning.

VMI scored three runs in the seventh inning and held off a late rally to defeat William and Mary 8-7 in a baseball game at Williamsburg.

The Keydets took a 5-0 lead in the first inning but the Tribe rallied and cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth. After VMI took an 8-4 lead in the seventh William and Mary added three more runs but could pull no closer.

Ryan Glynn went 2-for-5 with two RBI for VMI (6-11). Jon Towers was 1-for-2 with two RBI for William and Mary (10-6).

Washington and Lee and Hampden-Sydney battled through 10 innings to a 9-9 tie in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball game called because of darkness in Lexington.

Former Cave Spring High School pitcher Mark Hazelwood went the distance for Hampden-Sydney (2-4-1), and Rob Boston pitched nine innings in relief for W&L (3-8-1). Bates Brown led the Generals' offense, going 2-for-6 with three RBI.

Brooke Weedon scored four goals to lead Radford past Marist 13-6 in a non-conference lacrosse game in Radford.

The win might have been costly for the Highlanders (2-1), who saw leading scorer Scott Regina go down with an injury in the second period after having scored two goals. Corey Fenley added three goals and two assists for Radford.

Travis Webb had three goals and an assist as Vinton defeated Campbell County 4-0 in a boys' lacrosse game at W.E. Cundiff Field. Ware Smith had a goal and goalie Chris Mercer had to make only four saves in posting the shutout for Vinton (1-1), a team made up of William Byrd High School students.

Caitlin Sarkisian scored four goals and Kathleen Harrington made 15 saves in Lynchburg College's 13-5 victory over Washington and Lee in an ODAC women's lacrosse match. Lindsay Coleman had three goals for the Generals (3-1, 2-1). Lynchburg is 2-0, 1-0.

There will be a practice session for all classifications at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday. This practice session will start at noon and last until 5 p.m. Promoter Whitey Taylor has also announced that there will be a drivers meeting on Saturday for all classifications except Late Model Stock Car drivers.

Virginia Tech's Dave Hannett took ninth place in the decathlon at the Florida State Invitational track meet in Tallahassee. Hannett was third after the first day of competition, but dropped after disappointing performances in the pole vault and javelin and a 12th-place showing in the 1500-meter run. Matthew Levine of the (Fla.) Shore Athletic Club won the decathlon with 6,890 points. Hannett had 6,143.

The Washington and Lee men's swimming team set four school records on the first morning of competition at the NCAA Division III championships in Oxford, Ohio.

David Stillman qualified for the championship heat with a school-record time of 20.98 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, and Nathan Hottle advanced to the championship heat in the 200 individual medley with a W&L-record time of 1:54.78.

The Generals' 200 freestyle team and 400 medley relay team earned spots in consolation heats, as did Frank Braden in the 500 freestyle. Braden set a school mark with a time of 4:38.13, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Stillman, Craig Sears, Tony Diederich and Hottle was clocked in a school-record 1:25.65.
