CRIME TIPS LINE INSTALLED IN BLACKSBURG|

Residents who have information about criminal activity in the town are being encouraged to call the Blacksburg Police Department's new "tip line."

The department has designated the phone number 961-1819 to take tips. An answering machine will take messages after 5 p.m. weekdays and on weekends. During regular business hours, an officer may answer the tip line.

"We need the community's help in solving crime," said Detective Sgt. Donnie Goodman.

The tip line will allow residents to confidentially provide information that they think police should have. The number should not be used to report an emergency or a crime in progress, Goodman said. Those calls should continue to be made by dialing 911.
