TECH SENIOR RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP

Virginia Tech's Christi Osborne is one of two recipients of the 1995 Rawlings Scholarship Award for women's basketball.

The senior forward, chosen by a committee of the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association, will receive a $1,000 grant for graduate or undergraduate studies.

Osborne, who has a 3.94 grade-point average in early childhood development, was a first-team GTE Academic All-American this season and a second-team selection last season. She averaged 12.8 points per game as a senior and ranks among Virginia Tech's career leaders in points, rebounds, field goals, 3-point field goals, free throws, free-throw percentage, assists and blocks.

In Ferrum, Chad Maddox went 4-for-6 with two homers and five RBI on Monday as the Panthers gave coach Abe Naff his 299th victory, a 19-4 rout of Ramapo in college baseball.

Naff, who has a 299-98 record in his 11th season at Ferrum, will go after victory No.300 when the Panthers (12-4) visit his alma mater, Lynchburg College. Ramapo's record slipped to 0-3.

Scott Scovil shot a 2-over-par 73 to lead Christopher Newport to a two-shot lead over Ferrum's Gold team in the first round of the 16-team Ferrum Invitational golf tournament at The Waterfront. R.J. Weaver shot a 78 to lead Ferrum Gold. The tournament concludes today.

Teams from nine high schools will gather from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans' Administration hospital fields in Roanoke for the first Roanoke Valley Lacrosse Jamboree. Timesland high schools competing are Cave Spring, Patrick Henry, Salem, Rockbridge County and William Byrd.
