Caterpillar Inc., union set meeting

Negotiators for Caterpillar Inc. and the United Auto Workers have agreed to meet again, after two days of talks last week in Indianapolis, a federal mediator said Monday. The company, manufacturer of heavy industrial machinery, and the labor union have been at odds for several years. Caterpillar is parent of Carter Machinery Co. Inc. of Salem.

"These latest meetings were businesslike and candid, and provided for a good discussion of the key non-economic issues which separate the parties," said John Calhoun Wells, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
