NEEDS SURVEY IS SEEKING SENIORS' OWN PROGRAM IDEAS

NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEY forms from the New River Valley Agency on Aging are available in local senior centers and at the elderly nutrition site, Floyd Community Action building. The agency plans programs for seniors 60 and older in Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties and Radford. The surveys give seniors a chance to say what they'd like to see.

SENIOR GATHERINGS

Kathleen Sleven of the College of William and Mary presents "African-American Women in Retirement: Their Story," today, noon-1 p.m., 150 Squires Student Center, Virginia Tech. It's free and part of the Virginia Tech Center for Gerontology's lunchtime forum series. Brown-bag lunches welcome. 231-6817.

Jerry Fain leads the discussion "Controlling your 'Social Income'" Thursday, 9:30-11 a.m., when the News and Views group meets at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. 961-1134.

Thursday, 2 p.m., Richfield Retirement Community, Salem, presents another in its series of travelogues for seniors. The destination is New Zealand's north island, Auckland, the Rotorua region and Wellington. Refreshments available. Mel Mayfield's slide show and commentary happens in the Shenandoah Room at Richfield's Knollwood Apartments.

Computer-minded seniors can mark March 30, 8:30-4:30 p.m., on the calendar. That's when the Choices and Challenges Project presents its free 10th annual forum, "Quality of Life in the Electronic Village," at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center, Virginia Tech. The forum explores ways computer networks may affect communities and individuals.

Today, the Christiansburg morning group works at SHARE at 10 a.m., then has lunch. The afternoon group visits English Meadow at 1:30 p.m. for the birthday party.

Thursday, the Blacksburg group goes to SHARE at 1 p.m. and has lunch out.

Monday, 10 a.m., the Shawsville group has a group meeting in the Courthouse Annex.

Tuesday, 2 p.m., the Warm Hearth group visits Brook Meade for a birthday party.

March 29, the Christiansburg morning group visits Meadowbrook at 10 a.m. The afternoon group visits Brook Meade at 2 p.m.

Today, 11:45 a.m., a free video, "A Woman's Silent Legacy," a short program on osteoporosis prevention, is shown.

The "Design your own Shirt" class is March 29 and 30, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. It's $5 for materials. Bring a prewashed cotton shirt, tote bag or apron. Registration is required.

March 31, travel to Mercer Mall, West Virginia. Transportation is $2 and leaves the center at 9:30 a.m. Lunch is on your own at K&W Cafeteria.

The "Creative Memories" photo preservation class is Thursday, 9:30 a.m. It's $8, and registration is required. Start a scrapbook of photographs for future generations to enjoy.

Friday, visit WDBJ (channel 7) television in Roanoke. Lunch is on your own at the new Star City Diner on the City Market. Transportation is $3 and leaves the center at 9:30 a.m.

The center opens Monday and Tuesday at 10 a.m., and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

Line dancing for seniors is Friday at Warm Hearth Village. Transportation leaves at 1 p.m. and returns by 3 p.m.

Monday, noon, it's movie day. Bring your favorite movie or ideas for future videos. A small donation is requested to cover costs.

April 6 is the deadline to register for the "55 Alive" mature driving refresher class sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons for drivers 50 and older. The classes are April 10, noon-4 p.m. and April 12, 1:30-5:30 p.m. It's $8 the day of the class.

CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St. Sherry Kostric, 382-8173:

A quilted table cover class begins Thursday, 1-3 p.m., and continues for four weeks. It's $8 for seniors.

Friday, travel to the Walton's Mountain Museum, Schuyler, Va. Transportation for seniors is $4 and leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, at 8 a.m. Museum admission is $3.

A lunchtime slide show is Monday, 11:30 a.m. Beans and cornbread.
