LOWE NAMED COACH AT ALLEGHANY

THE MOUNTAINEERS' varsity football team will get direction from the former Bridgewater College coach.

Alleghany High School has named former Bridgewater College coach Max Lowe as the Mountaineers' varsity football coach.

Lowe succeeds Tom McIntyre, who resigned after the 1994 season.

Lowe stepped down from his Bridgewater post after the Eagles went 5-25 in three losing seasons under his direction. Bridgewater has not had a winning football season since 1980.

Bridgewater President Phillip Stone did not place complete blame on Lowe or other former head coaches for the Eagles' failure to win.

``Max couldn't do it, nor will a new coach be able to do it by himself,'' Stone said at the time of Lowe's resignation.

Lowe has been an assistant at Brookville, Broad Run and Park View-Sterling high schools. His college experience includes stops at Ohio University, Maine, North Carolina and Bowling Green.

Lowe was a 1976 graduate of Bridgewater who attended high school at Warren County. Ironically, Carl Watson, Alleghany's first-year boys' basketball coach, was an assistant at Warren County before taking over the Mounties' program.
