ROOT SELECTED AS FINALIST FOR KODAK TEAM

Virginia Tech center Jenny Root was named one of 46 finalists for the Kodak Women's All-America basketball team. The Kodak All-America Selection Committee will meet March 26-27 to select the 10 players who will be named to the team and the other 36 players will be recognized as honorable mention All-Americans.

Root was named the Metro Conference player of the year after averaging a team-leading 16.5 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game which led the Hokies to its first regular-season championship and an NCAA tournament appearance.

New River Valley Speedway practice schedules for stock cars, WKA karts and a car show have been set.

More than 35 cars from six divisions of competition will be on display both inside and outside of New River Valley Mall, Christiansburg, from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to Late Model Stocks, Limited Sportsmen, Modified Mini, Mini and Pure Stock cars, the new Mid-Atlantic open-wheel modified and Legend Cars will be present, along with the drivers.

The first WKA Kart practice will be held Sunday beginning at noon. Gates open at 10 a.m. The first race is set April 2.

Race cars will take to the track for the first of two practice sessions from noon-5 p.m. April 1. Gates open at 10 a.m. A second practice will be held from 4-8 p.m. April 6, with gates opening at 3. The first race of the 25-event season is at 8 p.m., April 8. For more information, call the speedway office at 703 639-1700.

Kevin Kurilla smashed a grand slam in the first game and Ron Preston threw a three-hitter in the second as Virginia Tech swept West Virginia 7-4 and 2-0 in a baseball doubleheader at Morgantown, W.Va.

In the second game, Preston settled down after allowing two hits in the first inning. He retired 18 of the next 21 batters he faced before yielding to Gillian with one out and one on in the seventh. Gillian retired both men and finished the game to earn his second save of the day.

Radford scored three runs in the first inning and went on to a 9-6 non-conference win over UNC Charlotte in Charlotte, N.C. Duane Filchner led the Highlanders (10-12) by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI and Bill Brennan went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Todd Cunningham hit a bases-loaded double and Chad France added a two-run inside-the-park home run in a seven-run eighth inning as Ferrum came from behind to defeat Pfeiffer 9-8 in a non-conference baseball game in Danville.

Jimmy Hamilton (3-2) picked up the win going all nine innings for the Panthers (14-4) while allowing seven hits and striking out 11.

Jeff Jones scored five goals and Billy Metz added three goals and two assists as Roanoke (4-2) defeated Amherst 18-9 in a men's lacrosse game at Salem. Todd Battaglia scored four goals for Amherst (2-1).

Amy Mantooth scored seven goals in a losing effort as Virginia Tech's women's lacrosse team lost its first varsity status home game to Goucher, 15-13.
