PATRICK HENRY GIRLS SEEK LONGER SOCCER TRIP

After going 15-0, Patrick Henry lost to Gar-Field in the Group AAA Northwestern girls' soccer tournament last spring.

Now, the Patriots would like to go further.

``I lost some good seniors, but my team has more select players than I have spaces on the team,'' said Patriot coach Sharon McCulley.

``We have a lot of depth as far as the bench players and some good freshmen coming along.''

The Patriots return three first-team All-Timesland selections in Emily Bryant at striker, Carrie Moore at stopper and Ayisha Whitenack on defense. Sarah Sharpley was a second-team All-Timesland fullback.

McCulley also figures Holly Spraker will step up as a striker. The outstanding younger players are sophomore Annie Eure at midfield and Erin D'Alessancros, a freshman, at striker.

Girls' soccer is growing: Roanoke Valley Christian will have a team for the first time; William Byrd and Northside are operating club squads that should become varsity outfits by next year as Roanoke County attempts to have separate teams for boys and girls. Only Glenvar, a Group A school, will continue to have boys and girls playing on the same team.

A look at other girls' teams:

CAVE SPRING: The Knights are getting another Beightol. Aimee Beightol plans to join her sister Alison as the two try to lead the Knights past Patrick Henry in the Roanoke Valley District. Aimee Beightol didn't play last spring.

Coach Peter Lustig reports that seven of his 18 players are freshmen. Kristen Winter, a center-halfback, should be outstanding.

Heather Krause, a junior, returns to try to improve a performance that earned her All-Timesland honors last year. She had 33 saves in two games against PH.

Other outstanding players for Cave Spring are Natalie Newman and Andee Moore at fullback, Nancy Dixon at halfback and leading scorer Tiffanie Jackson at forward.

NORTH CROSS: The Raiders will be led by returning All-Timesland center-midfielder Emily Cook, who scored 10 points for the Blue Ridge Conference champions.

The Raiders also have Mary Jennings back at forward, Katherine Kelly at midfield, Beth Hubbard on defense, eighth-grader Sally Flippin on defense and Whitfield Mastin at midfield. The Raiders suffered a blow when second-team All-Timesland sweeper Emily Kennedy decided not to play.

ROANOKE CATHOLIC: The Celtics have only one senior. Sophomore Christy Hinman, who was All-Timesland second team as a freshman forward, returns after scoring 18 points. Freshman Ann Stelzel will be at forward after playing as an eighth-grader against Blue Ridge Conference teams only. Sophomore Krista Engl takes over in goal.

SALEM: The Spartans lost Timesland Player of the Year Heather Moore, a center-halfback, and will have young players. Amy Moore, Heather's sister who didn't play because of a knee injury, will be back at midfield along with striker Meredith Hartless.
