SALEM FORMS NEW LANGUAGE ARTS CLASS

The Salem School Board voted Tuesday to restructure its seventh- grade English and reading programs, by merging the classes into one language arts class.

The move will take Andrew Lewis Middle School from a five-core subject curriculum to four, and it will add 15 minutes of instructional time in the math, science, social studies and language arts core areas.

The idea behind the merger was to provide teachers with more instructional time in academic areas, said principal Jerry Campbell.

"This is for academic classes. Physical education and exploratory classes won't be increased," Campbell said.

"We need the time. We've needed the time for years," said Sandy McCulley, a seventh-grade math and English teacher the school.

She said she's often frustrated when class bells cut her lessons short. "This extra 15 minutes will give us the time for a more hands on approach."

Board member Dr. Walter Franke commended the school's faculty for its initiative in putting together the proposal, which has been in the works for about three months.

"I hope that everyone is looking for ways to do things better," Franke said.

In other action:

The school board approved a recommendation by Superintendent Wayne Tripp that a make-up day be used for an extended Memorial Day Holiday. It will now be a 4-day-weekend.

The board voted to put out bids for two projects. Bids for air conditioning, lighting and window upgrades will be put out April 2. Bids for renovations at G. W . Carver will go out on April 9.

The board set Sept. 5 as the first day of school for the 1995-96 school year.
