VA. TECH ROLLS PAST MARSHALL

Virginia Tech scored five runs in the second inning and freshman Jon Hand pitched 61/3 innings of one-hit relief as the Hokies defeated Marshall 9-5 in a non-conference baseball game at Huntington, W.Va.

The Hokies (11-6) took a 6-2 lead in the second, aided by John Mader's two-run double. Mike Terhune, who had four hits in the game, added a run-scoring single in the inning.

Hand picked up his first career win, striking out 11 and walking only two. He did not allow a hit until a ninth-inning infield single.

In other sports in the region:

Malcolm Fink of Salem had a qualifying speed of 94.011 mph in his Chevrolet Lumina as he grabbed the pole for Saturday's Community Directory 300 at Franklin County Speedway. The rest of the field will qualify Saturday for the 3 p.m. race. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for kids 10 and under.

For the second consecutive year, Radford University will play host to the 10-team Radford University Invitational softball tournament today and Saturday at Salem's Moyer Complex. Teams from Radford, Charleston Southern, Cornell, Davis & Elkins, Longwood, Liberty, Maryland-Baltimore County, Shippensburg, St. John's and West Virginia State will compete.

Tickets are available at the gate and cost $3 per day or $5 for both days. Radford plays Cornell in the opener at 9 a.m. Friday.

Eric Johnson, Chad France and Chad Maddox each had two hits as Ferrum blasted Oswego State 10-2 in a non-conference baseball game in Ferrum.

Tom Wade and Tom Martin each scored three goals to lead Ohio State past Radford 12-6 in a non-conference lacrosse game at Radford.

Maura Wahlen scored a goal with 3 minutes left to break an 8-8 tie and lift Hartwick to a 9-8 victory over Roanoke College in a women's lacrosse game. Kate Stoehr had three goals for the Hawks (3-0). Alli Ogelsby had four goals for the Maroons (2-2).
