NEW RIVER PEOPLE

Joseph L. Wade of Christiansburg has been named a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Clubs International Foundation, the foundation's highest honor.

The award is in recognition of commitment to humanitarian service. It is named for the founder of Lions Clubs International.

Wade is an employee of Virginia National Guard and is stationed in Christiansburg.

He has been a member of Christiansburg Lions Club since 1981 and was president in 1989-90. Currently he is secretary.

Dr. Charles L. Boatwright has been named Citizen of the Year by the Blacksburg Host Lions Club on their 70th anniversary. Boatwright, who has practiced in Blacksburg for more than 40 years, voluntarily provided required physical exams for Blacksburg High School Athletes.

Heather Lee Canevari, granddaughter of Alfred and Gloria Canevari of Dublin, has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, Girl Scouting's highest achievement, for her efforts to organize a children's choir at her church.

Twenty-one dancers from Terry Wilson's Academy of Dance recently competed in the On Stage America Talent Competition in Albermarle, N.C. The dancers included Angela Mills, Heather Mills, Carrie Meadows, Rhiannon Brown, Leslie Mills, Brittany Kast, Gabe Simpkins, Jordan Simpkins, Natalie Dickerson, Natasha Stike, Stacy Porter, Leighanne Akers, Suzanne Akers, Holly Hall, Jennifer Songer, Rose McCuthchen, Theda McCutchen, Mariah Atkinson, Leah Graham, Yasemin Suer and Traci Barr.

Terry Wilson's By Design, an American Saddlebred mare, was recently named Adult Country Pleasure Horse High Point Champion for Virginia, for the second consecutive year.

Fifteen dancers from Dance Dimensions recently performed in Winston Salem, N.C. They included Jennifer Broere, Kelly Mezza, Stacy Mezza, Laura Burton, Nicole Smith, Cameron Femrite, Lindsay McCarthey, Ashley Burks, Amanda Patrick, Miranda Webb, Samantha Cooke, Kasey Branch, Maggie Beal, Kimmie Robinson, Dawn Espley.

Representatives from Wades and Kraft Foods recently presented the United Way of Montgomery County with a $500 contribution.

Mary Campagna-Hamlin, of Ironto, author of "Gainsboro: The Destruction of a Historic Community," will sign copies of her book Saturday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at T&H Christian Bookstore on Ferncliff Avenue in Roanoke.
