TRUCK FALLS INTO BAY; DRIVER MISSING

A tractor-trailer jacknifed about 1 p.m. Friday on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and fell over the side into the water, authorities said.

Divers will resume their search of the 80-foot-deep section of the bay today.

The accident occurred when the southbound tractor-trailer approached a van that had stopped for a road work crew.

The driver apparently didn't see the situation until the last minute and hit the brakes. The tractor-trailer went over the west side of the North Channel bridge, said Lorraine Smith, a spokeswoman for the bridge-tunnel.

Neither the van nor the road workers were hit, but the tractor-trailer tore out 50 feet of guardrail and damaged some concrete.
