CONVICTION

RULE No. 1 for crooks: Get professional help to overcome that attention-deficit disorder. You must keep your eye on the prize - getting away with the loot - and not allow yourself to be distracted by your neuroses.

Still, it's hard not to admire Eric P. Wilson's desire to look his best on the job. Presumably unaware that grunge is in, Wilson apparently stopped during a burglary - his - in progress at a Roanoke home to shine his shoes to gleaming perfection.

He departed with jewelry worth $5,000. Trouble was, Wilson left behind a calling card: a can of shoe polish and a personalized shoeshine rag bearing his initials. The police caught up with him, and a judge last week convicted him for breaking and entering and for grand larceny.

It's enough to make you think about finding another line of work. Something where your shoes aren't likely to get scuffed, and it pays to dress for success.
