SOCIAL STUDIES

KINDERGARTEN

The student:

will identify by name, picture and deed interesting people in American and world history (e.g., George Washington, Johnny Appleseed, Harriet Tubman, Walt Disney, Mahatma Gandhi).

will state examples of rules for safety, behavior and health, and state the benefits of following rules and the consequences of breaking a rule.

FIRST GRADE

The student:

will identify groups of people by name and deed who were important in the development of ancient civilizations in Egypt and the Fertile Crescent (e.g., Egyptian pyramids, early alphabet, Judaism).

will give reasons for patriotic symbols and traditions of Virginia and the United States, such as flags, national holidays and the Pledge of Allegiance.

TENTH GRADE

The student:

will describe historical developments from 1453 to 1650 A.D. in terms of how politics, religion, economics and technological innovation led to the expansion of European influence on the world, including the interaction between Western Europeans and the indigenous peoples of Africa and the Americas.

will analyze the interaction of environment, culture and technology on the lifestyles of people since the 15th century.

ENGLISH

SECOND GRADE

The student:

will write stories, letters and simple explanations; use declarative, interrogative and imperative sentences; use capitalization for all proper nouns and words at the beginning of each sentence; use correct spelling for high-frequency words.

will locate information in a reference book; use a table of contents; examine pictures and charts; and use indices.

NINTH GRADE

The student:

will analyze literature using knowledge of forms and the vocabulary of literary terms: explain the cause-effect relationship between characters and plot; differentiate among literary forms, e.g., tragedy, comedy, epic.

will produce expository writing, including letters, explanations, reports and analyses; group ideas into unified paragraphs; organize paragraphs into a logical progression.

MATHEMATICS

FIRST GRADE

The student:

will identify the number of pennies equivalent to a nickel, dime and quarter; will tell time to the half-hour, using a real analog clock or a model; will compare the weight of two objects, using a balance scale.

will sort and classify concrete objects according to one or more attributes, including color, size, shape and thickness.

SEVENTH GRADE

The student:

will compare, order and determine equivalent relationships between fractions, decimals and percents; will solve consumer application problems involving discounts, sales tax and simple interest, using whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percents.

will identify and draw the following polygons: pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon and decagon.

SCIENCE

FIRST GRADE

The student:

will investigate and understand that plants have life needs and functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics.

will investigate and understand the basic relationship between the sun and the Earth.

FIFTH GRADE

The student:

will investigate and understand that organisms are made of cells and have distinguishing characterics; understand the parts of a cell and the five kingdoms of living things.

will investigate and understand how sound is transmitted and is used as a means of communication; understand the communication tools, such as voice, Morse code, sonar, animal sounds and musical instruments.
