TOP-RANKED UVA FALLS TO HOPKINS IN LACROSSE

Virginia's reign atop the men's lacrosse world lasted less than a week as second-ranked Johns Hopkins routed the top-ranked Cavaliers 22-13 on Saturday at Homewood Field.

The Blue Jays (5-0) took a 12-4 lead 10:15 into the second quarter and never looked back en route to their second victory over a No.1 team in as many weeks. Hopkins, which likely will take over the top spot when the new U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll is released today, knocked off then-No.1 Syracuse on March 18.

``I told you folks last week I thought Johns Hopkins had the best team in the country, and they did nothing to change my mind today,'' said Dom Starsia, Virginia's coach. ``Hopefully, this is only Chapter 1 and we'll meet again.''

Terry Riordan led the way Saturday for the Blue Jays with six goals. His final goal gave him 152 for his career and made him the all-time leader in the program's 112-year history.

``I went into the game knowing how many I needed,'' Riordan said. ``With all the people asking me, how could I not? Thank God it [the shot] didn't go where I wanted to go. The defenseman got a stick on it and it went high after I aimed it low.''

Brian Piccola had four goals and two assists, and Dave Marr added three goals and three assists for Hopkins.

``Every aspect of the game went well,'' said Tony Seaman, the Blue Jays' coach. ``It's a lot of fun to play lacrosse when you play like we played today.''

Virginia went up 1-0 seven seconds into the game, when Tony Nugent scored off the faceoff, but that would be the Cavaliers' only lead of the afternoon.

Hopkins became the first team to score more than 20 goals against Virginia since North Carolina State in 1978.

``I was disappointed the way we came out,'' Starsia said. ``We didn't have much movement off the ball, and we were very impatient. We were never on track for the pace of the game. I don't think we were overconfident, but we weren't ready to battle these guys from the opening whistle.''

Doug Knight led UVa (5-1) with four goals and one assist, and Tim Whiteley added two goals and five assists. Nugent and David Jones scored two goals apiece.
