A second Republican, Montgomery County GOP Chairman Patrick D. Cupp, will announce Tuesday his intent to seek his party's candidacy for the state senate seat now held by Madison Marye, D-Shawsville.

Gary Weddle, a former Radford city council member, announced for the Republican candidacy Jan. 12. Rqadford lawyer Jimmy Turk, who had been mentioned as a potential GOP contender, said Feb. 177 he would not see the nomination.

Marye, who has held the seat since 1973, has not yet said whether he will seek re-election.

Cupp, 54, Montgomery County Republican chairman for a year, has said he would resign the chair if he becomes a candidate.

It will be his second state political bid. He narrowly lost the GOP candidacy for the 12th House of Delegates seat inn 1993 to Nick Rush.

Cupp is a graduate of Virginia Tech and the Realtor Institute of Virginia. He is a member of the Governor's Region 3 Economic Development Council and the Commission on Welfare Reform.

The 39th Senatorial District covers Montgomery, Grayson and Smyth counties, and parts of Pulaski and Carroll counties.
