ABBOTT'S K'S LEAD RADFORD TO A KEY `W'

Jim Abbott set a school record with 15 strikeouts as Radford University defeated North Carolina-Greensboro 6-3 in a Big South Conference baseball game Sunday in Radford.

Abbott (3-2) gave up five hits and walked two in a complete-game effort. He bettered the 12 strikeouts by Phil Leftwich - now with the California Angels - and Jimmy Nave.

Jeff Dean hit a two-run homer and Kelly Dampeer and Donnie Fields hit solo shots to power the offense for the Highlanders (12-13 overall, 2-1 conference). Dampeer, a shortstop from Northside High School, and Dean each went 3-for-4.

UNC Greensboro is 15-10 overall, 3-3 in the Big South.

In other sports in the region:

John Mader singled home David Fitt with one out in the 10th inning to give Virginia Tech a 3-2 victory over North Carolina-Charlotte in a Metro Conference baseball game in Blacksburg.

Fitt led off the bottom of the 10th with a bunt single and took second on Josh Herman's sacrifice. After Bryan King was walked intentionally, Mader singled to right as Charlie Gillian picked up the victory in relief for the Hokies (13-7, 2-1). Gillian (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings. UNCC's record is 15-10, 1-2.

Ferrum built a 6-0 lead through three innings and went on to a 7-1 victory over Christopher Newport in a Dixie Conference game in Newport News.

Jimmy Hamilton (4-2) struck out 12 and walked seven en route to the victory for the Panthers (16-5, 2-2). John Poindexter went 3-for-4, and Todd Cunningham, Chad Maddox and Chad France went 3-for-5 with all four driving in a run each. Christopher Newport is 16-6, 2-2.

Virginia's Lewis Chittengwa shot a 5-under-par 67 to finish three strokes ahead of teammate Jimmy Flippen and win the individual competition, leading the Cavaliers to the team title at the Furman Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Greenville, S.C.

Virginia finished with a three-round total of 876, seven shots ahead of second-place Ohio State with 883 and 14 shots ahead of third-place Virginia Tech. Brian Sharp led the Hokies on the final day, firing a 72 that enabled him to come in third in the individual race.

Flip Groggins of Fincastle led every lap en route to victory in an SCCA-GT 1 auto race in Charlotte, N.C.

Groggins, who qualified with a track-record speed of 122.8 mph, finished 32 seconds ahead of Dominic Toto of Paramus, N.J. Groggins holds the points lead in the Southeast division of SCCA.
