Ceramics on display

Ellen Shankin of Floyd has been chosen to exhibit ceramics in the Smithsonian Craft Show, to be held April 27-30 in the National Building Museum.

The juried show will present one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces in a variety of crafts by 120 artists, chosen from 1,270 applications.

The Gala Benefit Preview will be held April 26 from 6:30-9 p.m. The show is open to the public on April 27 and 29, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., April 28, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and April 30, noon-6 p.m.

Tickets are $8, $7 for senior citizens and $5 for children 5 and older. Tickets for the preview gala start at $50.

The museum is located at Fourth and F Street N.W., Washington, D.C.

Poetry contest

The Writers' Workshop of Asheville, N.C., is sponsoring its eighth annual International Poetry Contest.

First place winners will receive $500, second place $250 and third place $100. Honorable mentions will be chosen.

Poems are lmited to one page. All work must be unpublished. Multiple submissions are accepted with a $12 entry fee for up to three poems. Enclose a legal size, self-addressed, stamped envelope for manuscript return and/or list of winners.

Entries must be postmarked by May 1. Winners will be announced by Aug. 1.

Black History Parade

Area organizations and marching bands can still register to participate in the annual Black History Parade, scheduled for May 6 at 2 p.m. in Salem.

The parade's theme is ``Education: Saluting African American Educators and Institutions.'' It is sponsored by the Community Awareness Council and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture.

The parade will begin at Longwood Park, move west on Main Street and turn onto South Broad Street.

Parade grand marshals are the school superintendents of Salem, Roanoke County and Roanoke.

Short story contest

Entries are being accepted from Southwest Virginia writers for the Sherwood Anderson Short Story Contest, now in its 19th consecutive year.

Cash prizes will be awarded for categories from primary school through adult.

Arts and crafts show

Crafts, Etc. Etc. Etc. is accepting applications from arts and crafts exhibitors and from non-profit organizations for the sixth Annual Great Thanksgiving Arts and Crafts Show. It will be held at The Showplace, 3000 Mechanicsville Turnpike, Dinwiddie, on Nov. 24-26.

MS bike ride

The MS 150 Bike Tour, a two-day bicycle adventure/fund-raiser for multiple sclerosis, will begin in Charlottesville on June 10 and end the following day at Stonewall Vineyards in Concord.

Three meals plus snacks and water at rest stops are provided, as well as overnight accommodations at Longwood College.

Complete support for riders will include transportation for overnight gear, professional bike mechanics, sag wagons and medical vans, communication vehicles and transportation back to Charlottesville.

Volunteers are needed throughout the weekend.

Registration fee is $30, $35 after April 30. Pledges and/or donations of at least $150 must be raised in order to participate.
