"Things are not as regimented as they used to be," Haley said. "Kids expect to have more fun."
Haley has adjusted her approach to teaching to accommodate her pupils. "I do try to make it fun. I try not to have them just copy notes and read from the book."
Haley, who teaches social studies and reading, uses games and hands-on activities to keep her pupils interested. Her class visits Colonial Williamsburg, a field trip she finds valuable not only for its historical significance but for the independence it fosters in her pupils. "For many, it's the first night they've spent away from their parents," she said.
"Mrs. Haley deserves to be Teacher of the Week because she is very nice and she trusts children," said the pupil who nominated her.
Married and the mother of two boys,10 and 13, Haley enjoys crafts, reading and attending her boys' sporting events. She is coordinator for Odyssey of the Mind at Penn Forest Elementary School.
