TAKE NOTE

World Health Day is April 7, and this year's theme is "Immunize: Birth to Two, It's Up to You." A month-long immunization promotion will culminate during the last week of April with clinics in Montgomery County, Pulaski County and Radford.

Nine diseases can be prevented by shots, including whooping cough, which has been showing up increasingly in recent years in Virginia.

Health experts caution parents not to wait until their children start school to have them immunized. Babies and infants especially need these shots because their bodies have not had time to build up natural defenses.

Shots are free at local health departments, so a lack of health insurance is no excuse for not having immunizations completed.
