Montaldo to begin liquidation sale

Montaldo Corp., a chain of upscale women's apparel stores with one operation in Virginia, said Monday it will begin a liquidation sale Thursday, following a ruling by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the middle district of North Carolina. The 75-year-old company had been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection during reorganization. Its three remaining stores are in Richmond and Greensboro and Charlotte, N.C.

"Montaldo's stores helped pioneer the concept of ready-to-wear apparel for women, and they established standards in fashion, quality and service that were unsurpassed," says Clark Rowe, general manager of the southern region for Fox Promotions, a Crawford, N.J. liquidator. "Unfortunately, the impact of increased competition, the higher cost of doing business, and a more mobile society that is no longer totally dependent on local stores has caused the demise of this venerable retailing institution."

CFW to provide directory service

WAYNESBORO - CFW Communications Co. has won a contract to provide directory assistance to AT&T Corp. customers in the Shenandoah Valley.

CFW beat out Bell Atlantic Corp., which previously provided the service.

When CFW advertised for people to staff the directory assistance telephones, it got 2,600 applications for 300 jobs, said CFW president James S. Quarforth.

The operators will help customers seeking telephone numbers in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Quarforth said he hoped CFW would start to provide directory assistance for other telephone companies.

CFW is the holding company for the 97-year-old Clifton Forge-Waynesboro Telephone Co., now called the CFW Telephone Co., which serves 32,000 customers.
