HAMPTON INTERESTED IN STOKES

Ricky Stokes, a former Virginia player and assistant coach, met with Hampton University officials Monday to discuss the school's vacant men's basketball coaching position, sources told the Newport News Daily Press.

Stokes, an assistant coach at Wake Forest, was contacted by Hampton officials last week. He also has been contacted by officials at Akron regarding the vacant head-coaching position at that school.

Stokes, who will turn 33 on Wednesday, is a native of Richmond. He was a guard on the Virginia teams of the Ralph Sampson era, making a trip to the NCAA Final Four in 1981.

Stokes has been an assistant at Wake under Dave Odom, who was an assistant at Virginia during Stokes' playing days.

Officials at Hampton, which is moving from Division II to Division I next season, also have interviewed Georgia Tech assistant coach Dereck Whittenburg and hope to fill the position by early April.
