BITS, PIECES FROM COMMUNITY SPORTS SMORGASBORD

A little of this and a little of that make for a lot of everything. Such is the smorgasbord of sports happenings in the New River Valley when the seasons change.

So without delay, here is what has happened and what is happening today.

ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP: Southern States and Christiansburg Motors continued to hold down the top two spots in the Christiansburg Men's Open Basketball League.

In recent action, Southern States (9-1) topped Woodmen of the World, 65-45; Hubbell Lighting New, 81-45; and Wolverine #1, 87-36.

Meanwhile, Christiansburg Motors (9-2) beat Stones Cafe, 77-60, and Marshall Concrete, 86-65. But C.M. lost to Original Flow, 51-49, and fell out of first place.

Just behind the leaders are Corning (8-2) and Original Flow (8-3).

In the Christiansburg Men's Over 28 Slowbreak League, New River Pontiac/GMC/Nissan maintained a comfortable lead.

Two of the team's three victories were close calls. New River edged Hubbell Lighting-Old, 31-30, and had to go to overtime to beat Shelor Chevrolet, 56-53. Its other victory was also against Hubbell, 52-42.

Shelor and Wades each knocked off the front-runner recently. But New River (9-2) still holds a three-game lead over the pair.

In the Christiansburg Men's Church Slowbreak League, Presbyterian and Christian Growth Center were the only teams with winning records. The two were also separated by only one-half game for first place.

Presbyterian moved in front with a 52-44 victory over C.G.C. In other action, Presbyterian (7-2) beat St. Paul II, St. Paul I and Mennonite. Christian Growth Center (7-3) lost to Mennonite before besting both teams from St. Paul.

SPIKES AND SERVES SET: Smashers and Spike and Co. were the only two unbeaten teams after two weeks of play in the Christiansburg Coed Open Volleyball League. Both teams were 6-0. Just behind them at 5-1 were Spots and Life.

In the Christiansburg Coed Church A League, St. Paul (6-0) opened a two-game lead in just two weeks. Mennonite Fellow (4-2) was the only other team over .500, as three teams have split their first six games.

In the Christiansburg Coed Church B League, Mt. Tabor (6-0) also had a two-game lead after two weeks. But it had two close pursuers: Cambria Baptist I and Main Street Baptist II. Both were 4-2.
