PULASKI COUNTY OFFICIALS TO HELP SELECT REGIONAL JAIL SITE

Three Pulaski County officials will help pinpoint a site for a regional jail.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Jerry White, Sheriff Ralph Dobbins and Assistant County Administrator Peter Huber were named by the Board of Supervisors to the site selection committee, following a closed session Monday night.

Dobbins and Huber both represent Pulaski County on the recently formed New River Regional Jail Authority, which also includes Giles and Grayson counties and the city of Radford. Dobbins will represent the sheriffs from those localities.

"It is imperative that the question of the ... location of the jail be addressed immediately," Assistant Radford City Manager Bob Lloyd, authority chairman, told the board by letter.

He said planning has been based on the understanding that the site would be in Pulaski County somewhere within five miles of Virginia 100 and Interstate 81. To directly involve Pulaski County in the process, the authority agreed earlier this month to have the site selection committee composed of three Pulaski County representatives.

Engineering considerations for a jail site will be made available to the committee by Thompson and Litton, architects and engineers working on the project.

Lloyd reminded the supervisors that the cost and development of the site is important. The application for matching state funding on the jail listed the Pulaski County Corporate Center as a potential site, but that was mainly because the actual site had not been chosen yet.

It must be chosen soon, because the authority has to submit its final plans to the Department of Corrections by July.

This means that budgetary information, including construction costs, architectural and engineering cost, financial plans and other related information must be prepared before July, Lloyd said.
