ALLEN SIGNS PAY-RAISE AND LANDFILL BILLS

Gov. George Allen has signed bills to allow pay raises for the Montgomery County School Board and to pave the way for a regional landfill partnership in the New River Valley.

The first measure would authorize a doubling of School Board salaries to $3,600 a year. Before that could happen, the School Board would have to approve the change and the Board of Supervisors would have to agree to pay for it.

The second measure would permit the newly formed Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority to join the New River Resource Authority in its plans for a new landfill in Pulaski County late in the decade. Current state law forbids one regional authority from joining another.

The Montgomery authority is to take over operation of the Mid-County Landfill in July. Its members include Montgomery County, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Virginia Tech.
