A passer-by discovered Antoine Leroy Wilkerson of Massachusetts Avenue Northwest slumped in his car about 12:30 p.m., police said.
Police believe Wilkerson had been shot outside the car, which was parked next to Bentech Manufacturing at 15th Street and Centre Avenue.
Major J.L. Viar said blood was found 10 feet from the car, and on the driver's-side door handle.
Viar said a few people reported hearing two gunshots and seeing a car leave the area.
An employee with Garlick's Garage on Cetnte Avenue said all he could hear was loud bass music coming from Wilkerson's car just before noon.
The employee, who asked that his name not be used, said he saw Wilkerson in his car as he left for lunch about 12:10, but figured the man was working on something in his car.
Viar said Wilkerson was unarmed when they found him. He would not comment on the type of weapon used to kill Wilkerson or on a possible motive.
An autopsy was scheduled for today.
It was the eighth homicide in Roanoke this year. Four people were killed in the city last year, the lowest number in almost three decades.
